Having a mobile friendly website is no longer enough to keep up with the competition. Businesses are now leaping into the development of mobile apps; reaching customers 24 hours a day, on all types of mobile devices.

When marketing your app, don’t just rely on app stores as your platform – expand your strategy. These tips will maximize on your reach, and facilitate user downloads by linking directly to their app store (Google Play for Android, or iTunes for IOS device users).

1. Google Click-to-Download AdWords:

Use Google’s click-to-download ad campaigns to place your app icon and download link in Google search results, and be immediately visible to your targeted keywords, and audience. This Google extension also offers the ability to deep link your app icon to a specific section of the app that is relevant to the search terms. When a user who already has your app searches your keywords, your app icon can act as a landing page and call to action.

Google’s click-to-download ads increase relevant impressions by being device specific. Ads for apps that are only available on Android devices will not appear in Google search results of users of other devices such as IOS, and vice versa.

During my time at Canadian Tire I had the privilege of managing the implementation of Google’s click-to-download mobile ad campaigns. Canadian Tire was the first Canadian retailer to dive into this marketing medium using the Beta version of mobile click-to-download ad campaigns.

2. Facebook Mobile App Install Ads:

Maximise on your social reach with mobile app install ads, and premium placement of your app icon and direct download link on mobile Facebook news feeds.

Facebook’s app install ads provide businesses with a unique platform within which to leverage Facebook user data to narrow in on target audiences. With the ability to control this uniquely specific data, your ad campaigns can be tested and customized according to measured effectiveness.

As an added feature to improve the relevance of ad impressions; your mobile app install ads are not displayed to users who have already downloaded the app, and connected with Facebook.

3. Mobile Device Detection:

Detect the type of mobile device being used to visit your website, and display content customized to the device, and user. If your app is available in a format compatible with the user’s device display your app landing page; social media statistics and direct download link to the appropriate app store.

4. Market Online:

Use paid online marketing, and email campaigns to promote your app, and direct traffic to your website, specific app landing pages, or app stores.

5. Pre-plan Your App Launch:

Implement a marketing strategy for your app launch, develop a fan base, and have a launch event. Increase the hype with your audience with a media kit containing exciting details about features, benefits of your app, screenshots, beta reviews, etc.

6. Get Social:

Engage with social networks, relevant blogs/communities/groups, and promote your app. Implement a social media strategy and regularly update your social profiles with fresh content about the app, as well as other information relevant to your audience (services, products, guides, etc.).

7. Encourage App Reviews:

Invite reviews of your app by sending key bloggers and app reviewers personalized requests with a promo code to download your app for free, and include your media kit.
